The furniture-width rule of thumb
Framers and interior designers lean on a simple ratio: art hung above a piece of furniture should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of that furniture's width. Too narrow and the piece looks stranded above a couch or dresser; too wide and it overwhelms the furniture instead of sitting with it. Working that ratio backward from each canvas width gives the furniture range in the sizes above.
It is a starting point, not a law. A slightly undersized piece above a wide dresser still looks intentional if the wall around it has breathing room. A piece that runs a little wide can work too, if it is the only thing on that wall. Use the ratio to get in the right range, then trust your eye over the math.
The honest limit of the largest size
The 30x40 is the biggest canvas offered, and it is genuinely sized for a loveseat, a compact sofa, a mantel, or an entryway wall. A standard three-seat sofa, usually 72 to 84 inches wide, is wider than that. Hung alone above a full-size sofa, a 30x40 will read a little small relative to the furniture below it. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to either give it a wall without a big anchor piece of furniture, where scale is set by the room instead of the couch, or to flank it with two smaller canvases so the total width matches the sofa. Ordering a bigger single canvas than 30x40 is not currently an option here, so one of those two approaches is the honest fix rather than a size that does not exist.

It depends on the sofa. A loveseat or a compact two-seat sofa, roughly 53 to 60 inches wide, is a genuine match for the 30x40 canvas. A standard three-seat sofa, usually 72 to 84 inches wide, is wider than any single canvas here, so a 30x40 hung alone above it will read a little small relative to the furniture. The two honest fixes are hanging it on a wall with no big furniture setting the scale, like a mantel or entryway, or pairing it with two smaller canvases so the group spans the width the sofa calls for.
Can I hang two or three canvases together instead of one large one?
Yes, and it is a common way to fill a wide wall without ordering an oversized single piece. Treat the combined width, canvases plus the gaps between them, as the "one piece" for sizing against your furniture. A gap of about 2 to 3 inches between canvases reads as intentional; wider gaps start to look like separate, unrelated pieces.
Does a multi-pet portrait need a bigger canvas?
