Shar Pei
Watercolor
Shar Peis are compact, wrinkled dogs whose folds concentrate around the head, neck, and shoulders rather than covering the whole body the way a puppy's do. The coat is short and famously bristly to the touch, and like the Chow Chow, the tongue is blue-black.
Every Shar Pei portrait is built around what makes the breed unmistakable: the concentrated head wrinkles, the blue-black tongue, and the short bristly coat. A custom Shar Pei portrait from Pet on Canvas is made from your photo and starts at $24.99 (under $30) for a high-resolution digital portrait; gallery-wrapped Custom Canvases start at $49.99 and include the digital file. You choose watercolor, oil painting, pencil sketch, pop art, surrealist, or anime style, and a digital proof arrives in 2-3 business days, or 1-2 days with the $10 expedited option. Unlimited revisions are included before approval, an extra pet in the same portrait adds $20, and standard U.S. canvas delivery usually takes about 6-7 business days after approval.
The wrinkles are the whole portrait, but not in the way people expect. Adult Shar Peis carry far less loose skin than puppies, and the folds concentrate around the head, muzzle, and shoulders rather than draping the entire body, so an adult portrait needs restraint, not maximum wrinkle coverage.
Coat texture matters more than most people realize with this breed. It is genuinely bristly, almost prickly, rather than soft, and that changes how light catches it: short, stiff hair scatters light differently than a smooth or fluffy coat, giving the surface a slightly matte, textured look.
The blue-black tongue, shared with the Chow Chow, is one of the breed's most distinctive traits, though most reference photos will show it closed. When it is visible, we render it accurately rather than defaulting to a standard pink tongue, since that detail is part of what makes the portrait unmistakably a Shar Pei.
Oil painting and pencil sketch both handle the wrinkle structure well, one for depth and shadow, the other for precise linework. Surrealist style is a strong option too. This is a breed built almost entirely from unusual, specific features, and a style with room for the unusual tends to suit it.
A Shar Pei who shares the house with another pet can share the canvas too: portraits of two or more pets are painted from separate photos.

Adult Shar Peis carry far fewer wrinkles than puppies, concentrated mostly around the head, muzzle, and shoulders rather than the whole body. We follow your dog's actual wrinkle pattern from the photo rather than adding puppy-level folds across the body, which would read as the wrong life stage entirely.
Fawn is the most common, but we paint black, cream, and sand or apricot Shar Peis just as often. The short, bristly coat texture reads differently depending on color, with darker coats needing more careful highlighting to show the wrinkle folds instead of disappearing into shadow.
Oil painting is strong here, since it can shade each wrinkle fold with real depth. Pencil sketch renders the bristly coat texture and the fine wrinkle lines with precision. Surrealist style suits the breed's genuinely unusual features, the folded skin and the blue-black tongue, for a more striking image.
